The Institute for Complex Analysis of Regional Problems, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (ICARP FEB RAS)

ICARP FEB RAS is located at the Russian Far East in Birobidzhan. The Institute is founded to study the regions in different scale levels as an integrated system with interaction of natural, economic and social facets. The researches are largely focused on the development of the Russian Far East and the Jewish Autonomous Region.

ICARP FEB RAS is a research institution, which makes a significant contribution to numerous science and engineering areas.

Main areas of scientific activities:
- Complex analysis and modeling of processes of natural and natural-economic regional systems development;
- Study of the character of interaction between nature and society in regional systems.

The strategic goal of the Institute is to increase and improve the fundamental, empirical and innovative knowledge of the development of regions as complex integrated systems to ensure optimum solutions to the problems of regional development of territories.

Over 40 highly qualified experts with a broad scientific background and keen knowledge of RAS Programm “Priority directions of development of science, technology and engineering” operate as an umbrella organization with a main topic in the study of the fundamentals of regional development, combined with the simulation of the development of a particular region.

ICARP FEB RAS substantially contributes to the development of research capacities in the Russian Far East. A key competence is the ability to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, different types of data from multiple thematic sources and services into a single analysis. The Institute conducts scientific, developmental and implemental researches in the spheres: mathematical modeling of natural and social-economic systems, biology, geography, climate and climate change, sustainable use of natural resources, environmental science, environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation, social and economic development, rural demographics and development, migration.

The Institute has research facilities and equipment necessary for carrying out up-to-date environmental and molecular genetic studies (Atomic Absorption Spectrometer Solaar6M, Gas Chromatograph Mass SpectrometerGCMS-QP2010 Ultra, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Applied Biosystems 3500 Genetic Analyzer, Planetary Mono Mill).

Some of the most important achievements:

• Set of mathematical models for the dynamics of interacting biological systems taking into account their age and genetic structure.
• Methodology for environmental assessment of small and medium cities in the Russian Far East.
• Method and GIS-technology for spatial and temporal wildfires forecast.
• Estimation of the coastal slopes stability for small and medium rivers.
• Development of the system to prevent impact of extreme temperatures on human health. A climate assessment of the Russian Far East for the purpose of developing of Weather Warning Systems.
• Climate change mitigation and adaptation for sustainable agricultural and social development.
• Analysis of evolution and development of the socio-economic system of the Jewish Autonomous Region.

The Institute consists of eight research laboratories:

Department of natural sciences:
Laboratory of mathematical modeling of population and ecological systems
Laboratory of ecology, genetics and evolution
Laboratory of regional biocoenotic researches
Laboratory for modeling of geological structures
Laboratory of regional geoecology

Department of social science research:
Laboratory of regional social-economical research
Laboratory of the history of Jewish culture and the Jewish immigration

The Institute has an efficient network of research contacts at the international, national and local levels, with institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, universities and local authorities. International cooperation is organised with the U.S.A. (University of Miami), Germany (University of Freiburg), Serbia (University of Novi-Sad), New Zealand (University of Auckland), China (Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Institute of Botany, CAS). It has experience in organization of international conferences, training events and workshops concerning research development.

We are serving our mission by creating and disseminating scientific and research knowledge, sincerely striving for safe living environment for every citizen of Russia. But our mission goes beyond our country. We are getting very much international, serving many people of the planet and sharing our knowledge with them. We are open to challenges and changes, adopting the best experience of the world research institutes and universities, developing internationally, at the same time serving our own country, seeking continuous improvement and leadership among the best institutes of our area.
